Integrative Medicine – Providing Health and Hope

Fertility

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years to enhance and restore fertility in both men and women. Current research demonstrates the many benefits of using Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of infertility and other reproductive disorders. Whether you are trying to get pregnant naturally or undergoing assisted reproductive procedures, such as inseminations (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF), the proper application of acupuncture, herbs and nutrition has been clinically shown to greatly increase your odds of a successful pregnancy and birth.

It is estimated today that 1 in 8 couples are affected by infertility. There are a number of factors that greatly influence fertility and conception some of which include age, medical history, overall health, stress levels, and environment. All of these things can affect your ability to get pregnant, and the resulting health of your baby if you do get pregnant. At Acupuncture Mama by Essential Points, our goal is to increase your chances of having a healthy, happy baby. To do that we must first focus on improving the overall health of both parents to ensure the most optimal environment for conception to happen. We will work with you to design a comprehensive treatment plan that will include acupuncture, herbs and some diet and lifestyle modifications.

How will acupuncture affect my reproductive system?

Chinese medicine offers a natural, non-invasive approach to treating infertility by focusing on enhancing the quality of eggs, sperm, uterine lining and cervical fluid. Furthermore, acupuncture has been shown to regulate hormones and menstrual cycles, improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, reduce miscarriages and enhance the immune system. Sometimes this approach is sufficient for couples to conceive on their own. In other cases, it offers a valuable adjunct for couples who are about to undergo the expense and physical demands of IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Studies have shown that acupuncture significantly increases the success rate of ART while also alleviating the side-effects of treatment (Paulus et al, 2001).

How many treatments will I need?

If you are generally in good health, with no pre-existing conditions, we recommend coming in three months prior to the time you plan to start trying to conceive. It takes at least that long to positively influence the quality of follicles and/or sperm being produced. If you have a pre-existing condition, we recommend you come in at least six months prior to conception. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to restore your own health so that conception can occur naturally.

With regard to ART, there are a number of protocols that we use depending on the history and health of the patient. If you are already beginning your IVF cycle, we typically recommend 4 to 8 treatments. If you are not yet beginning your IVF cycle, it is a good idea to have a consultation as soon as possible so that we can evaluate your specific needs. Dealing with any imbalances prior to beginning your IVF cycle can greatly increase your health and your chances of a successful IVF pregnancy.

Can you treat men?

Yes. We are now learning that up to 50% of infertility cases can be attributed to male factor. This number is much higher than once thought, yet still it is often overlooked when a couple is struggling with infertility. New information suggests that male fertility also declines with age with an increased risk of miscarriages and children born with developmental problems. Even if you are planning on doing IVF/ICSI, you should not simply rely on adequate sperm quality. Ignoring the realities of male factor could be ignoring half of the problem.

Menopause

Menopause is a natural, physiological cycle that occurs in all women. For some women, going through menopause can be a very difficult and even emotionally painful time. Conventional medical treatments are usually only aimed at addressing the various signs and symptoms commonly associated with menopause. Often, these treatments include the use of hormones, which for some women pose an increased risk of cancer. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a great alternative for the treatment of menopause.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine we recognize that although these changes in body chemistry are occurring as part of a natural process the signs and symptoms of menopause are simply an indication that something is out of balance. Some of the signs and symptoms of menopause include, hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, insomnia, joint aches and pain, and severe mood swings.

There is no need to suffer through it alone. At Acupuncture Mama by Essential Points, we can provide the support you need to help you move into this new phase of life.

Headaches & Migraines

The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 45 million Americans suffer from debilitating headaches and migraines. Some causes include emotional stress, excessive work, improper diet, physical trauma, pregnancy, and hormone fluctuations. They can affect your work and home life, and have a significant impact on your well being, but there is hope for long term relief.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has uncovered many different diagnostic patterns related to headaches and migraines. At Acupuncture Mama by Essential Points, our goal is to identify the main diagnostic pattern associated with your headaches or migraines. We take a whole body approach to your pain and symptoms. By looking closely at the nature of your headaches or migraines, determining what brings them on, how they feel to you, and what other symptoms are associated with them (i.e. nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, etc.) we can get to the root cause.

The number of treatments you will need to resolve your headaches or migraines will depend on several factors including, the history, frequency, and severity of your headaches or migraines as well as your overall health. Most of the time, our patients see improvement after four to six treatments.

Pain

It is estimated that four out of five Americans will experience some form of back pain in their lifetime. There are many causes of pain including stress (whether physical or emotional), improper lifting, traumatic injury, sudden movement, and tight or strained muscles or ligaments. When your body is put under any kind of stress your Qi becomes stagnant, unbalanced or deficient, and this can lead to pain and inflammation. Acupuncture helps to ease your pain because it increases circulation and reduces inflammation.

At Acupuncture Mama by Essential Points we will ask you many questions during our initial evaluation, some of them seemingly unrelated to your pain. This helps us arrive at a treatment plan that is comprehensive and specifically tailored to help you. Acupuncture treatments will not only help eliminate your pain but they have the added benefit of giving you more energy, better sleep, increased immunity and an overall improved quality of life.

My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for a year with no success. The fertility doctors never came up with a reason why we couldn't get pregnant and we wanted to pursue a natural and healthy conception. I met Annette in March 2008 and found out she is and acupuncturist, right then and there I got her card and told her I wanted to find out more about Acupuncture and fertility. We had a consultation and I started going on a weekly basis. She reduced my stress, prescribed herbs to balance out my system and was a great listener. By February 2009 I was pregnant! I 100% contribute my conception to the help of Annette at Acupuncture Mama by Essential Points. Her training, dedication and determination to help others is priceless. I will continue to refer her to friends and family.
